In-plane elasticity of beetle elytra inspired sandwich cores

The Beetle Elytron Plate (BEP) is a new class of biomimetic sandwich core that features excellent compressive strength, energy absorption capacity and flexural properties. These characteristics make BEPs suitable as potential replacements classical honeycomb cores in panels. This work describes the behaviour in-plane engineering elastic constants parametric BEP topologies for first time. beetle elytron configurations are simulated using Finite Element models, including full-scale models representative unit cells with periodic boundary conditions asymptotic homogenization. also benchmarked against experimental results obtained from ASTM tensile tests related to Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio shear modulus. then used perform analysis geometry cellular configurations. Results this will provide solid foundation further research on structures expand their applications into wider fields.
